Community Safety

Northwest Michigan Council of Governments administers programs that work with probationers and parolees, in order to increase their successes in the community. This means access to stable employment, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, and assistance with other barriers to success. We find the resources needed for probation and parole agents to effectively manage their clients, and help them stay away from a life of crime.

Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative assists former prisoners returning to their communities. MPRI's mission is to reduce crime by providing services through existing agencies and managed by parole agents.

The Northwest Michigan Community Corrections program is a 7-county effort to maximize services for county jail inmates.

Fathers who actively participate in the lives of their children diminish the risk of childhood poverty, mental illness, juvenile delinquency, early sexual activity, teen pregnancies, substance abuse and failure to complete high school, among many other things.

Responsible fathers are men who:

  • Put their children's interest before their own.
  • Serve as role models to their children (leading by example).
  • Separate other relationship issues from their relationships with their children.
  • Play an active role in their child's emotional and academic development.
