Career Advisors

Career advisors assist job seekers in creating an effective resume, interviewing successfully, accessing training programs, and planning for long-term careers.

Career Planning

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in a certain job, such as a housekeeper, miner, machine operator, or secretary? You may have questions such as, Do you sit or stand all day? Do you need a college degree or special certificate? You can use the software provided in the Northwest Michigan WORKS! Resource Rooms to find out what skills are required for a certain job, how much training is needed, average wage, and more. Visit or call a Service Center near you today.

Classroom Training

Workforce Investment Act funds provide eligible job seekers the opportunity to return to school. Acquiring new skills, a certificate, or degree increases their potential for getting and keeping a job. Contact a Career Advisor in your area for more information.

Dislocated Worker Program

Dislocated workers are those who lost a job due to downsizing or business closing. Northwest Michigan Works! can offer dislocated workers a myriad of services to assist them in their transition to other jobs or new careers. Federal and state funding help dislocated workers to go back to school or get trained on the job. Business Liaisons and Career Advisors work with employers and job seekers to provide confidentiality and sensitivity during a difficult time. If you are an employer and will be laying off several staff, contact your Business Liaison for assistance. If you are a worker and are being laid off, contact a Career Advisor.

JET (Welfare Reform)

JET - Jobs, Education, Training - is a comprehensive new program to help cash assistance recipients move into permanent jobs. The program focuses on long-term goals for each individual, enhancing job opportunities with training and coaching. Only referrals from Department of Human Services are eligible for this program.

Job Search Assistance

The Northwest Michigan WORKS! Service Centers provide internet access to search job postings on Michigan's Talent Bank. Anyone who is uncomfortable with computers can ask for assistance from staff, or look through printouts of job postings on the Job Board. Career Advisors help you develop skills in job search such as networking, informational interviews, and cold calls. Visit or call a Service Center near you.

Adult Education Learning Labs

The trainee learns while actually performing the job duties and earning a wage. The business gains a competent employee and receives up to 50 percent of the trainee's wages for a designated training period. If you are an employer, contact your Northwest Michigan Works! Business Liaison. If you are a job seeker, contact a Career Advisor.
