Northern Michigan Regional Planning Director Selected for International Fellowship
Matt McCauley, the director of regional planning and community development for the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, has been selected to receive a research fellowship to study the linkages between regional planning and workforce development in Europe. McCauley received the fellowship through the Urban and Regional Policy Program of the German Marshall Fund. He was one of just three recipients selected from a very competitive pool of domestic and international candidates.

Northwest Michigan Works! Presents Award for Parolee Success
Scott Kulanda received an award from Northwest Michigan Works!. He put in serious effort to turn his life around after being paroled from Pugsley Correctional Facility. Scott took advantage of Michigan Works’ employment services which led to employment as a machinist.

Grandmother Selected as Adult Education Student of the Year
46-year-old Fay Dwyer of Traverse City is already a grandmother but that definitely doesn’t slow her down. Dwyer is raising three of her own grandchildren, runs a licensed foster care home, and is still finding time to work on earning her high school diploma at the Northwest Michigan Works! Adult Education Learning Lab in Traverse City. Dwyer’s hard work and dedication have earned her recognition as the Northwest Michigan Works! Adult Education Student of the Year.

Wexford County Worker Receives Michigan Works! Award
A Manton man who changed careers after being laid off has received special recognition from Northwest Michigan Works!. Michael Springer is the Excellence in Career Transition Award winner.

Charlevoix County Student Receives Michigan Works! Award
A young woman from East Jordan has received special recognition from Northwest Michigan Works!. Lisa Clark is the Youth Program Customer of the Year.

Two Manistee County Women Receive Michigan Works! Awards
Two Manistee County women received special recognition from Northwest Michigan Works!. April Birch from Copemish is the PATH Program Customer of the Year. Roberta Allen from Kaleva is the Dislocated Worker Program Customer of the Year.

Workers, Students, and Employers Recognized by Northwest Michigan Works!
Northwest Michigan Works! has given special recognition to some of the workers, students, and businesses it serves. The awards were presented at the June 10 meeting of the Northwest Michigan Workforce Development Board in Traverse City.

DNR Invites Public Input on Forest Plans for Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Manistee Counties
The Department of Natural Resources will host open houses on Tuesday, June 25, and Wednesday, June 26, in Traverse City and Kalkaska to provide information and receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments for 2015 in the Traverse City management unit, which includes Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Manistee counties.

NMC Student Video Challenges the Stereotypes of Poverty
In addition to studying a variety of social problems from the local through the global levels in a Modern Social Problems course (SOC 201), NMC students worked together on a semester-long service learning video project that focused on myths and stereotypes about poverty and people living on low-income.

Beaver Island Lighthouse School Graduation Spring 2013
The Beaver Island Lighthouse School held a Completion/Graduation Ceremony for the Class of Spring 2013. Two students received their high school diplomas and they and 21 other students received certificates for completing a semester at the school.
