The Business Case 
for the Poverty Reduction Initiative

Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Doug Luciani was the keynote speaker at the Poverty Reduction Initiative's Regional Poverty Conference. Luciani talked about what he calls the business case for the Poverty Reduction Initiative. He says its important for the business community and the Poverty Reduction Initiative to work together to fight poverty.

The Role of Education in Fighting Poverty

Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District Superintendent Michael Hill is also Co-Chair of the Poverty Reduction Initiative's Advisory Committee. Hill says the education system plays an important roll in helping people break out of poverty. He says early childhood education is especially critical in the fight against poverty.

Poverty Conference 2009: A Call To Action

The Traverse Bay Poverty Reduction Initiative held a two day conference to help 21 counties in Northern Michigan learn how to move forward with their own poverty initiatives. The conference featured Dr. Donna Beegle. Beegle is a poverty expert who spent 28 years living in poverty. She talks about the importance of developing programs recognizing the different life experiences of people living in poverty. Poverty Reduction Initiative Co-Chair John Stephenson and Northwest Michigan WORKS! Program Director Jan Warren also talk about fighting poverty in Northern Michigan.

Traverse Bay Poverty Reduction Initiative

National poverty expert Donna Beegle, PhD. talks about the importance of mentoring in helping people move out of poverty. Beegle spent 28 years living in poverty before a mentor helped her break the barriers of poverty. Other people affected by poverty also talk about how they've been helped by mentors. There's also a discussion about Team Work Northwest, a Poverty Reduction Initiative program that places mentors in the workplace to help people keep their jobs.

What college has to offer and how it can help people choose a career path was discussed at a Why College? workshop a Northwest Michigan WORKS! Service Center.

"College opens up doors," said Kareen Monton, West Shore Community College Career Counselor.
